Our Name

About our Name, ‘Grace Reformed Church’

Grace:

This refers to the fact that ‘God saves sinners.’  Salvation from the guilt and condemnation of our sin is totally God’s work and gift to us in Jesus Christ.

Through faith (itself a gift) in Christ, God grants forgiveness of sins, imputes Christ's everlasting righteousness, and gives eternal life to His elect people according to His sovereign good pleasure, will, and power, and is in no way contingent on man’s works or will.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Reformed:

We are sometimes asked the question, ‘What is a Reformed church?’  The name ‘Reformed’ comes from the 16th century Protestant Reformation, when God used men like Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, and John Knox to recover the truths of God’s word.  God uses biblical preaching and teaching to ‘reform’ us both in doctrine and life.  As summarized in the Reformation ‘solas’, we preach that salvation is by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to the Scriptures alone, for the glory of God alone.

We also hold to the historic Confessions arising out of the Protestant Reformation; namely, the Belgic Confession of Faith, Heidelberg Catechism, and Canons of Dort.  We believe these ‘Three Forms of Unity’ faithfully summarize the doctrines of Scripture, and thus actually function in the life of the church as confessional and teaching standards, subordinate to the Bible.
